Ngorongoro Crater
One of Africa’s greatest natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro Crater is a site to behold. And one you will never forget.
What to expect…
No one ever forgets their first sight of Ngorongoro Crater. The view down from the crater’s rim makes even the largest elephants look like small ants moving in slow motion across the crater floor. Being a bowl and having incredible luscious and diverse habitats across the crater, the wildlife rarely leaves and doesn’t need to leading to simply the greatest concentrations of wildlife in any area in Africa. From the grasslands that support incredible numbers of herbivores and the predators who feed on them to the central salt lake where thousands of flamingoes congregate, and the leopard-rich fever tree forests, Ngorongoro is almost too much. With the sheer numbers and density of wildlife present you will be surprised that there are no giraffe or impala, but the quantities of everything else as well as the chance to see black rhino mean you won’t miss them. There are no lodges inside the crater and instead are all around the outside, meaning that you will most likely have full-day safaris in the crater due to the time spent getting in and out. And really, one day is almost enough. It is that good. Though incredibly busy so choosing camps with the quickest access in and out can mitigate some of the crowds.
When to Visit
Ngorongoro is arguably good all year round. However, the long dry season from June through October offers fantastic wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources and predators take advantage. This is peak season, however, and tourist numbers will be at their maximum so crowds are to be expected. The short rains in November and December refresh the landscape and bring new life with the wildebeest calving season and related incredible predator activity in the Ndutu Plains in the wider conservation area in January and February’s short dry season. March and April’s long rains transform the landscape into a lush paradise though game viewing can be difficult.
The Crater Rim’s elevation means temperatures can be cool and the weather misty and damp year-round so dressing in layers is essential.
