Rwanda
Mystical and magical, ‘The Land of a Thousand Hills’ is home to the incredible mountain gorillas. There is something in our collective psyche that draws us to gorillas. Something evocative about the mist, the primal jungle habitat they live in, the idea of climbing a mountain to spend one precious hour with one of our closest relatives.
The Land of a Thousand Hills
For many, seeing gorillas is a dream come true, founded on memories of Diane Fossey carrying little orphans to her forest home, or David Attenborough having his hair pulled on television so many years ago.
We build seeing gorillas up in our heads as a life-changing experience. A once in a lifetime, a dream come true. And you know what? It really can be. Even for those of us who were once skeptical.
Info note:
Rwanda is safe, very welcoming and also extremely clean. Each month, every citizen, even the president, is out cleaning the streets. It’s known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’ and this is evident from the moment you land in the capital, Kigali. The drive to Volcanoes is a constant up and down, and you will be amazed at the number of cyclists and walkers on the roads. It’s a beautiful, lush, green country, full of farmland and crops and trees. The food is tasty, the accommodation options are varied in both price and quality, but all come with friendly smiles and welcoming people.
When to Visit Rwanda
Rwanda is open year round for tourists, but as most will be visiting for gorilla trekking, the best times are generally when the trails are easiest in the drier months of June to October. Of course, being tropical and mountainous, rain can occur throughout the year in Rwanda creating majestic, misty scenes through having the additional effect of making the trails more difficult to hike due to the mud.
